To commemorate Women’s History Month this March, The Greenville Triumph & Liberty is proud to spotlight the remarkable contributions of women within our community. The Club is dedicated to sharing the stories of inspiring women, with a focus on celebrating and showcasing their impactful roles in shaping the rich history of our organization.
Alison Stelling
Liberty Assistant Coach and Video Analyst
During games, I tag every moment live as it happens so that we can break down film and evaluate it to use as needed in future film sessions. I also provide information for halftime discussions with the team and assist with practices regularly from a tactical and technical perspective.
I think being a female in sports is a growing cause, but obviously, it still has so much room to increase. Growing up, I had mainly male coaches, and while many were great role models, there is just something about being a female coach and understanding other women on a different level than males can. My high school coaching staff is 100% female, and I think it is super important for my players to see multiple perspectives of women in the game.
Inaugural year playoffs were super cool to be a part of with the Liberty. Seeing the growth of the league through that season and being able to see high-level players improve in their game and build relationships with other college players was impactful on and off the field.
Margueritte Aozasa (UCLA head coach) for being a young female taking over a program and winning a national championship year 1. Winning isn’t everything, but she obviously makes an impact. And then, I would select Kristine Lilly for her impact on the game itself and her leadership even today in her retirement.
Reaghan Duval
Greenville Liberty Assistant & Goalkeeping Coach
I will work alongside Head Coach Julie Carlson and the rest of the GVL Liberty staff to ensure a positive experience for all our players. I will also work closely with our goalkeeping unit during training sessions, games, and film.
Being a woman in the sports industry gives me the ability and platform to create representation and inspire the next generation of female athletes. Every day, I am blessed with the opportunity to impact young female athletes within their sport, both on and off the field.
I have two very memorable moments. First, my playing career was during my junior year at Campbell University, where we beat HPU to win the Big South Tournament and go on to the NCAA tournament. Because of COVID-19, the state of NC was going to host the entire tournament, and we actually ended up receiving a home game against Iowa which all around was an amazing experience. Secondly, it from this past fall at Lenoir-Rhyne, where we ended up having a historic season – winning the SAC regular season, SAC tournament, Southeast Regional champions, and making it to the NCAA Elite 8.
From a soccer perspective, I would definitely say the USWNT during the early 2000s – I remember watching Dare to Dream, the movie about the ‘99ers on repeat. From a life perspective, I would definitely say that my mom has also served as a big inspiration to me just because of how much she has taught me and helped me grow into the woman that I am today!
