Goals from Jacobs, Stark & Baccelli earn fourth-straight victory
Athens, GA (June 15, 2024) – The Greenville Liberty secured a 3-1 victory over Athens FC on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Georgia team for the second time in four days and climbing to third place in the division. The club is now 5-3-1 on the season in the USL W League.
It was clear from the start that this match was set to be different than Wednesday’s 7-0 shutout. Quick off the mark, Athens nailed a long-range shot in the 16th minute to open up scoring. However, Greenville responded promptly and began the struggle to equalize. Finally, in the 44th minute, a golden opportunity gave Sarah Jacobs a free shot on net following a deflected shot from Ella Schneider.
Both sides retreated into the locker rooms 1-1, before returning to face the heat once again for the final period. The Greenville Liberty established control immediately by taking the lead with a goal from Lela Stark and then adding another in the 54th minute with Nya Baccelli on the end of it. The match played on, but Greenville’s healthy lead proved to be to difficult for Athens to overtake. Greenville swept the series to finish 3-1 versus Athens scoring a total of 10 goals between two matches.
The Liberty will next travel to Birmingham on Wednesday night and Tennessee SC on Saturday night, before returning home for its season finale on June 25th in Paladin Stadium. Ticket are available now.
