Greenville drops final 2024 match 2-0, finishes season fourth in division
Greenville, SC (June 25, 2024) – The Greenville Liberty Soccer Club was unable to mount a second half comeback on Wednesday night, falling 2-0 to the Chattanooga Red Wolves in the final match of the 2024 regular season.. Two first half goals from Chattanooga settled the match, despite a valiant effort from the Liberty in its attempts to make a comeback. A controversial disallowed goal from Sarah Jacobs in the 88th minute prevented the Liberty from entering the scoring column.
From the onset, Chattanooga took control of the game, with Kennedy Ball scoring early in the 4th minute off a free kick, putting the Red Wolves ahead 1-0. The Liberty attempted to respond quickly with a free kick of their own in the 8th minute, but were unable to convert an equalizer.
Chattanooga extended their lead in the 23rd minute when Corrine Hessler capitalized on a corner kick, tapping in a goal to bring the score to 2-0. Despite some promising opportunities, including a near miss from Alexah Fite on a free kick in the 24th minute, Greenville continued to trail. A crucial penalty kick save came just before halftime by goalkeeper Henley Grunst to keep the scoreline 2-0.
In the second half, the Liberty fought hard to regain momentum. Jaleah Simmons released a strong shot on goal in the 53rd minute that narrowly missed its mark. As the match progressed, Greenville intensified its offensive efforts, culminating in a corner kick in the 88th minute that initially saw Sarah Jacobs net a goal. However, the goal was disallowed due to a questionable foul called on Jacobs after running in to the goalkeeper. Despite its resilient and spirited play in the second half, Greenville was unable to breach Chattanooga’s defense further, resulting in a final score of 2-0 in favor of the Red Wolves.
