Division leaders undefeated through six matches
Greenville, SC (June 7, 2022) – The Greenville Liberty Soccer Club extended its unbeaten streak and sent NC Fusion home scoreless after 3-0 shutout at Triumph Stadium on Tuesday night in a match presented by Furman University. The Liberty tallied goals from Hershfelt, Conti and Bornkamp to reaffirm its first-place seat and bring the club’s unbeaten record to 5-0-1.
The Liberty took the field for its second match in five days, lacking the club’s usual chemistry in the opening minutes. Greenville found their footing quickly, though, and broke in to the scoring column thirteen minutes into the match when Clemson midfielder, Hal Hershfelt, dribbled a pair of Fusion defenders to score her first Greenville Liberty goal. The rest of the half continued without change as Greenville denied Fusion any sustained attacks and prevented the visitors from capitalizing on their brief opportunities. Greenville held the lead 1-0 into the break.
Eager to strengthen their lead out of the break, Greenville threw their league-best attack at the Fusion defense. Midway through the half, the Liberty offense got an extra boost from head coach Julie Carlson’s deep bench. Seconds onto the pitch, former Greenville Tech Charter star, Dubem Dike made the difference as she found the feet of Caroline Conti for a second Liberty strike. In the 74th minute, Megan Bornkamp drove a shot into the back of the net off another Dike assist to give Greenville a three-goal lead. With no response from Fusion, Bornkamp’s goal would seal the match for the home side and extend the Liberty’s unbeaten record to 5-0-1.
The Upstate’s pre-professional women’s soccer team plays its third home match of the month this Saturday, June 7th at 6:00 pm. Tickets are on sale now.
