Road draw brings Liberty closer to clinching division and playoff birth
Greenville, SC – The Greenville Liberty earned a point on the road against the NC Courage U-23s to continue its unbeaten streak and season-long lead in the South Atlantic Division. The road match was among the most challenging the club has seen this season, ultimately ending in a 1-1 draw.
Coming into the Saturday afternoon match, the Greenville Liberty sought to clinch the division title and their eighth win as they faced off against the NC Courage U-23s. Greenville was able to take an early lead in the opening minutes after Julie Mackin pings a shot into the Courage net just three minutes into the match. A physical match led to some early substitutions for Greenville before the break, but the away team led the way 1-0 at the halfway mark.
In the 74th minute, NC Courage equalized with a goal of their own to draw the match level at 1-1. Seventeen-year-old, Christian Brathwaite, made a game-winning attempt in the closing minutes but was denied by the Courage goalkeeper from UNC, Emmie Allen. Despite multiple opportunities, the Liberty were unable to move ahead in the final minutes, ending the night in a 1-1 draw.
The team continues its bid for the South Atlantic division Tuesday night at home as they host their inaugural regular season finale against Asheville City FC at 7:00 PM.
