Carly Wilson’s Strike Seals 1-0 Win
Greenville, SC (June 4th, 2024)- The Greenville Liberty Soccer Club hosted the Southern Soccer Academy for its first rematch of the season in Paladin Stadium on Tuesday night. The Liberty’s attacking waves proved too much for the Georgia side late in the match, as midfielder Carly Wilson’s go-ahead goal led to Greenville’s second triumph of the season and an overall record of 2-3-1.
Early in the first half, defender Alexah Fite demonstrated her skill with a solo run from 30 yards out, but her shot was easily handled by the SSA keeper. Jaleah Simmons followed up with a close attempt in the 31st minute, but once again, the SSA defense stood firm. Midfielder, Lela Stark nearly put the Liberty ahead just before halftime, her shot bouncing off the crossbar and away from danger. The first 45 minutes ended in a 0-0 stalemate, with both teams prepared for a tough second half.
Forward, Tara Katz had a shot on goal in the 77th minute but failed to break the deadlock. Bri Pinsaco came on as a late substitute and made an immediate impact driving towards the goal. Despite the onslaught of offense from the home side, the scoreline remained unchanged. The decisive moment came in the 86th minute when Katz delivered a perfect cross to Carly Wilson, who found the back of the net, securing a 1-0 win for Greenville Liberty.
“I think what we’re trying to do now is find that core group that will finish out the league divisional play in a positive way and I think we’re starting to see that come together,” said head coach Julie Carlson. “Now we go into Asheville with a whole new belief that we knew was there, but we just needed to make sure that it actually happens and I think it’s there going into this weekend and the rest of the season.”
The Greenville Liberty will travel to North Carolina this Saturday at 7:30 PM to take on Asheville City. They will be back at home on June 12th at 7:00 PM to face Athens United. Tickets are available now.
